ball droppingsAddicting and noisy play-toy. It can also be seen as an emergence game. Alternatively this software can be taken seriously as an audio-visual performance instrument. Balls fall from the top of the screen and bounce off the lines you are drawing with the mouse. The balls make a percussive and melodic sound, whose pitch depends on how fast the ball is moving when it hits the line.
bastienA composer’s dream : a fail-safe orchestra at one’s fingertips obeying ever so gently to his every command : a timeless sounding orchestra, both futuristic and slightly dada, conjuring ancient traditions in its surprisingly sensuous music. This is, in a nutshell what Pierre Bastien’s "Mecanium" is all about, a daydream of sorts that he has successfully pursued since 1976. The musicians of his orchestra are machines. And the idea behind it is simple, efficient and poetic : to have traditional instruments (Chinese lute, Morrocan bendir, Javanese saron, koto, violin, sanza, etc.) played by a mechanical instrument made of meccano pieces and recycled turntable motors. These hybrid and self-playing sound sculptures perform a series of short pieces, charming and hypnotic. " (Michel F. Côté)

descriptive cameraThe Descriptive Camera works a lot like a regular camera—point it at subject and press the shutter button to capture the scene. However, instead of producing an image, this prototype outputs a text description of the scene. Modern digital cameras capture gobs of parsable metadata about photos such as the camera’s settings, the location of the photo, the date, and time, but they don’t output any information about the content of the photo. The Descriptive Camera only outputs the metadata about the content.
design by numbersDBN is both a programming environment and language. The environment provides a unified space for writing and running programs and the language introduces the basic ideas of computer programming within the context of drawing. Visual elements such as dot, line, and field are combined with the computational ideas of variables and conditional statements to generate images.
design interactions, rcaDesigners often refer to people as users, or sometimes as consumers. In Design Interactions, we prefer to think of both users and designers as, first and foremost, people. That is, we see ourselves as complex individuals moving through an equally complex, technologically mediated, consumer landscape. Interaction may be our medium in this department, but people are our primary subject, and people cannot be neatly defined and labelled.

En fonction du contexte dans lequel se trouve l’acteur, des mots-clés sont envoyés au programme (grâce à un PDA Wi-Fi) et utilisés comme input dans Google, de sorte que le flux textuel est toujours lié au contexte.

kriegspielIn January 1977, the French Situationist Guy Debord founded the Society for Strategic and Historical Games. The Society had an immediate goal : to produce the "Kriegspiel," a "game of war" that Debord had already designed in his head years before. Inspired by the military theory of Carl von Clausewitz and the European campaigns of Napoleon, Debord’s game is a chess-variant played by two opposing players on a game board of 500 squares arranged in rows of 20 by 25 squares.

lux.vuWhy algorithmic artwork ? In my daily work as a professional programmer I enable others to create art with the computer. While my own work involves a form of creativity, it lacks the visual and emotional aspects that I admire in the art created by those who use my software. I create this art as a personal outlet for my own creativity in a medium I am skilled in. I have no formal backgound or training in art, and I have no doubt that my artwork reflects that. Nonetheless I enjoy it and hope you do also.

music text composition generatorThe P22 Music Composition Font was proposed in 1997 to the John Cage Trust as an accompaniment to the John Cage text font based on the handwriting of the composer. The idea was basic and simple-every letter of the alphabet was assigned to a note on a scale. This would allow for any text to be converted into musical notation. The idea was rejected by the John Cage Trust, however the John Cage Silence font based on his famous 4’33" composition was accepted and continues to be offered for sale to this day.

net.flagIn the new millenium we see nations trying to lay claim to a new kind of territory, the Internet. This virtual territory is no longer a geographic location, a new land with resources to be claimed. It is a space created by man-made infrastructure that carries the potential of information, group identity, economic and political advantage. Nations and terrorists alike use the Internet to carry out their agendas. Those who control the structures, both hard and soft, that make this new space, control the nature of the space itself, providing or limiting access to the resources of the network.

shredderThe web browser is an organ of perception through which we ’see’ the web. It filters and organizes a huge mass of structured information that spans continents, is constantly growing, reorganizing itself, shifting its appearance, evolving. The Shredder presents this global structure as a chaotic, irrational, raucous collage. By altering the HTML code before the browser reads it, the Shredder appropriates the data of the web, transforming it into a parallel web. Content become abstraction. Text becomes graphics. Information becomes art.

similar diversityAn information graphic which opens up a new perspective at the topics religion and faith by visualizing the Holy Books of five world religions. Communalities and differences of Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism are shown up in this datavisualization. The visual’s basis is an objective text analysis of the Holy Scriptures, and works without any interpretations from the creators’ side. Despite - or even because of this abstraction, the artworks are not only working on an informal but also on an emotional level. The viewers should be inspired to think about own prejudices and current religious conflicts.

software art spaceWe represent and distribute software art from the world’s leading artists—a new breed of artists who utilize the latest tools and software to create extraordinary screen-based experiences. The art is derived from custom code that is written by the artist. In traditional terms, the code represents paint or clay that the artist uses to create. It is molded, tweaked, massaged, layered until the artist is happy with the results of the executed code. The results, just as with all art, can vary drastically. The works can be simple. Complex. Abstract. Figurative. Your artwork is delivered in a beautiful hand-crafted box with a CD. It is dynamic. Alive. Constantly generating new forms. Since the art is “unframed”, you choose how to present it—large plasma, small LCD, touch screen or wireless mouse, etc. The experience can be a dedicated one, just as you hang a single photo or a painting. Or it can be placed on an existing system in your home. There are many options.

wattenbergMartin Wattenberg is a researcher at IBM whose work focuses on visual explorations of culturally significant data. His algorithmic approach is informed by his background in mathematics. Wattenberg is equally known for his scientific and applied work in the field of information visualization, and for his information-based digital artwork. In his work, the mathematical underpinnings of a computer program are not simply tools used to create art ; they are the core of the artworks themselves. Technology Review recently named him "one of the world’s 100 top young innovators."
we feel fineWe Feel Fine is an exploration of human emotion on a global scale by Jonathan Harris and Sepandar Kamvar. Since August 2005, We Feel Fine has been harvesting human feelings from a large number of weblogs. Every few minutes, the system searches the world’s newly posted blog entries for occurrences of the phrases "I feel" and "I am feeling". When it finds such a phrase, it records the full sentence, up to the period, and identifies the "feeling" expressed in that sentence (e.g. sad, happy, depressed, etc.). Because blogs are structured in largely standard ways, the age, gender, and geographical location of the author can often be extracted and saved along with the sentence, as can the local weather conditions at the time the sentence was written. All of this information is saved.
